e.   Holy Week and Easter services review:
1.  Kris shared Pastor Ted's emailed comments.  (His comments follow these minutes.)

3.  Easter Vigil - four trays were needed for this service.  Kris had filled 5 trays to be sure there would be a sufficient amount.

4.  Easter Sunday - went well however the purificator should be changed after each service.  Intinction was used Easter Sunday and was well received.  Discussion followed indicating that intinction should be considered for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas each year.  In the future, we may want to also have juice available and set up more stations.  The church would need appropriate communion ware and Kris will approach Faith to see if there is memorial money.  Pastor Ted provided his personal supplies for our use this past year.

PASTOR TED’S E-MAILED COMMENTS ABOUT HOLY WEEK SERVICES:

Thursday stripping of the altar:
==> Would a hand-off approach work to avoid people carrying stuff down the steps?  The fall seemed to be a loss of balance when feeling a bit nervous already about negotiating the steps (plus, the cross was kind of big and awkward.)  Another approach for providing some safety might be to have one person stand at/on the steps who can provide an assuring presence and extra touch if needed.

==> I turned off the last light earlier than I intended... I meant that action to be the indication to the congregation that the stripping was complete, that the service was over, and that people could leave.  (I thought the work was done when I turned off the last light and I hadn't realized that more was still being done deep in the chancel.)  Perhaps an altar-guild person could be designated before the service to indicate that all is-in-fact done (remember, you'll have a another "new" pastor next year.)  Though we planned to not provide a spoken word at the conclusion, I have usually have said something, such as: "Our worship ends; we leave the sanctuary in quietness" or "we conclude this part of our 3-days worship and return tomorrow for its continuation" or something to that effect.  OR, the stripping of the altar was completed before the Psalm was finished providing a clear conclusion.  (By the way, there was one more aspect that made it seem to me that things were completed... Pastor Lisa got up to help during the fall-emergency and then went into the narthex area rather than returning to a pew... giving me another "clue" that the stripping was completed... and it began to look to me like the people in the sanctuary didn't know what to do... I'm trying to think of the things that contributed to making the ending of the service less smooth.)

==> Regardless of my blunder, I perceive that the action of stripping the altar is very appreciated and meaningful tradition for people.

Friday - Lights:
I thought the tea lights worked well on Friday... they did provided a smaller flame than what a typical candle offers, but it provided an interesting contrast with the center "Christ candle".  I originally thought to use the two candelabras with six candles each... and the Paschal Candle in the center... but I thought the glass followers would make lighting a bit difficult.  Also, I found no regular-sized bell to extinguish the candles (it seems the bells might have been removed from the two-hand candle-lighters).  I improvised the arrangement used on Friday and thought that it actually was a better option in the end.  (And - tea lights are really cheap.)  I've never had 12 people come forward to light/extinguish the 12 candles as I had on Friday (another improvisation of the day) but I rather liked the effect.

Saturday - Lights:
Again, I improvised what eventually happened in the beginning of the service.  I typically use Christmas Eve candles so that everyone has a candle during the Easter proclamation.  I didn't think about asking Bev where they are stored and didn't discover them during a brief search on Saturday.  I then thought of purchasing, say, 50 candles.  But, I decided in the end to purchase only 12 tapers ($2 for four - cheap) and have 12 people come forward as I did to light their candle - thinking that it made a connection with the twelve lights used on Friday night.  Again, I rather liked the effect of the approach I ended up using.

Saturday - Altar "decorating":
A few staff people thought the changed altar effect was helpful to emphasize the "resurrection" transition in the service.  It was easily done and I don't think distressed any of the paraments.  Flipping back the frontal of the altar and pulpit gave them a "barren" look.  (I also flipped back the ends of the fair linen so it wasn't visible.)  Pastor Lisa and I then easily "decorated" and transformed the altar by returning the ends of the fair linen, flipping the altar's frontal back into place, placed the candles and altar book, flipped the pulpit parament back into place, and turned on the lights of the decorated cross.  (I'm just documenting what we ended up doing during the service.)

Easter - Communion:
The distribution went well with four stations using intinction.  Having a fifth station in the balcony would have made things just a bit more efficient at 9:00 and 10:30.  Nonetheless, we finished the distribution by the middle or end of the third communion hymn.  If this approach is used again, it might be important to have sufficient communion-ware (I provided a small set for Pastor Lisa from one of my communion kits and used one of my plate/cup combination "intinctoriums".)  (The two stations in front used already available vessels.)

Well... it was busy week; lots was done.  Thanks for all that you and the Altar Guild people did to make things happen well.

         Bread Services are:

         a.   Marcia Frank provided an opportunity for committee members to sign up to bake communion bread and the schedule was reviewed.

         b.   Kris reviewed the process for changing wicks in the candles (use rope style with filament loop for the eternal and paschal candles, and use filament loop only for candles on the altar):

              1.  Never trim the wick.  Instead, tug on bottom to keep the wick no more than 1/8 inch high.  (If the wick is too low, use the copper wire in the drawer with the extra wicks to hook the loop and gently tug it up.)

              2.  If a black crust forms on the wick, you may have to break/pinch it off to be able to tug the wick down to the desired length.

              3.  If a wick is very frayed across the top, it is time to insert a new wick.  Use the copper wire to thread the wick through the brass top’s opening (similar to using a needle threader in a needle’s eye) and adjust the wick as stated in step 1 above.

              4.  Let the wick soak briefly in the oil and light.  The flame should never be over 3/4 inch high.  If necessary, blow out and readjust the wick and try again.

              5.  Check and fill candles on Thursday and Saturdays as needed.

         c.   Inquiry was made as to the whereabouts of the cloth (veil) that goes between the paten and the host box.
