The Palm Sunday Entrance Rite

Processional Gospel Matthew 21:1-11

P As they approached Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find a colt tied there which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it to me. If anyone says anything to you say, 'The Lord needs it.', and he will send it immediately."

A This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet when he said; "Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."

P The disciples went and did as Jesus directed them. They brought the colt and put their cloaks on it and Jesus sat on it. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

A The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest heaven."

P When Jesus entered Jerusalem the whole city was in a turmoil, asking, "Who is this?"

A The crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee."

P The Gospel of the Lord.
A Praise to you O Christ.

WE LISTEN TO THE WORD: In the Processional Gospel for Passion Sunday, Jesus enters Jerusalem to the shouts of “Hosanna.” For his ride into the holy city, Jesus did not select a horse, but rather a donkey. The horse was the preferred mount of a military commander during the time of war. The donkey was the mount of the peaceful, perennial traveler. The entry of Jesus was intended to bring a message of peace and life into a world of war and death.

WE WORSHIP TOGETHER: Holy Week begins with Matthew’s account of the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Though the entrance hymn is for Advent, note how its words reflect the excitement of God’s people awaiting a king. The mood of worship then shifts as the parade for King Jesus turns into the Passion of Christ.

COFFEE is served in the Fellowship Room following the 8:00 a.m. worship.

WORSHIP INFORMATION: Attendance last week was 543 . . . Transmitters are available for the hearing impaired. Ask an usher for help . . . Children’s worship bags may be found in the Commons Area and in the main church entry . . . If it is uncomfortable for you to stand during the service, please feel free to remain seated . . . The nursery, located in the Commons Area, is staffed Sundays from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. for infants and children up to age four . . .

WELCOME to the Lord’s Table. All the baptized are invited to receive the Sacrament. You may stand or kneel to receive the elements. Children who commune may extend their hands; those who don’t yet commune should have hands folded and they will receive a blessing. Gluten-free wafers are available for those who cannot have wheat products. White grape juice is available for those who cannot have wine. Let a pastor or server know when communing.

RAISING FUNDS FOR A NEW GARAGE: This summer, we are hoping to construct a new garage and shop that replace the existing garage that is almost 40 years old. The new garage is needed to provide better security for the yard equipment, and additional storage space is needed to the equipment. To fund the $20,000 project, we already have $12,000 in a dedicated account for capital improvements to the church property. Our goal is to raise another $8,000 by April 30.

NURSERY: If you will help to supervise the nursery during Holy Week and Easter services, please contact Pastor Lisa at lewton@stjohnelc.org or at 225-6747. Nursery help is needed Thursday, Mar. 20 at 7:00 p.m. and Easter Sunday at 8:00 and 11:00 a.m.
