NEW HYMN: The Sending Song is Send Me, Lord (#809). It’s a new hymn that we began learning last week. Both the text and music come out of the South African tradition.

FIRST COMMUNION: We celebrate with Logan Karsky as he receives his First Communion today. Chris Zubke will also receive his First Communion this month.

FLOWERS ON THE BACK ALTAR are given in loving memory of husband and father Al Hermann, from Evelyn, her daughters and their families.

SENIOR HIGH BIBLE STUDY will be Monday, June 16 and Wednesday, June 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the youth room. This is a chapter by chapter Bible study led by Jess Throlson. We meet most Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the summer. Keep an eye on the calendar!

FATHER’S DAY BRUNCH AND CAR WASH: Happy Father’s Day! Join us for brunch and support the Belize Mission Trip! A brunch will be served from 7:30 a.m. until noon at the St. Anthony’s Club. The cost is $6 for people seven and up, and it’s free for those age six and under. A car wash will be in the church alley from 7:30 a.m. until noon for a free will donation.

MISSION TRIP STOCKS: Starting June 22, you will have the opportunity to purchase stock in our mission trippers. For $50 per share you will get a post-trip newsletter with a behind the scenes look at the mission trip, stories from the trip, and insights from those who went. This is a great way to contribute to this ministry. Stocks will be sold between church services in the Commons Area from June 22 to July 6. You can also talk to Jess Throlson at the church office.

WELCOME TO THE LORD’S TABLE: As Jesus freely welcomed sinners, so we welcome all to the Lord’s Table, regardless of age or other human division. Holy Communion at St. John Lutheran Church is open to all who are aware of their own brokenness, since we believe that “nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God” (Rom. 8:39). You may stand or kneel to receive the elements. Children who do not yet commune should have hands folded to receive a blessing from the pastors. You may ask a server to provide a gluten-free (rice) wafer or grape juice if needed.

WORSHIP INFORMATION: Attendance last week was 401. . . Transmitters are available for the hearing impaired. Ask an usher for help . . . If it is uncomfortable for you to stand during the service, please feel free to remain seated . . . The nursery, located in the Commons Area, is not staffed during the summer, but may be used for infants and children when an adult is present . . . Children’s bags are available during worship in the Commons Area and in the church entry . . .

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to all who serve God in the role of father or grandfather. As we give thanks for fathers, we realize that the role of a Christian father is more important in today's world than ever before. One little boy, however, has this observation about Father’s Day: “Father's Day is just like Mother's Day; only you don't spend as much on a present.”

FAMILY EVENT: Looking for a fun night out for your family? Join us for “Dinner and a Movie” on Wednesday, July 16 at 5:15 p.m. We’ll eat dinner together, watch the movie Finding Nemo, and enjoy family fellowship. If you’re interested in helping put the event together, contact Sunday School Director Susan Moberg at 483-6154 or moberg@stjohnelc.org. You should also RSVP to Susan by phone or e-mail.

FAMILY RETREAT: Families, it’s time to check your summer schedules. St. John Lutheran Church is sponsoring a family retreat at Badlands Ministries Bible Camp on the weekend of June 27-29. The theme is “God’s Power.” The deadline to sign up with Youth & Family Ministry Director Jess Throlson is Sunday, June 15. The cost is $25 per person. Telephone Jess at 225-6747 or e-mail her at throlson@stjohnelc.org to register.

VOLUNTEER NEEDED: Do you speak a foreign language? Are you available from 9:30 to 11:30 on Friday, June 20? We need help with one of the Power Lab activities that day – it will be fun and meaningful. Contact Susan Moberg at 483-6154 or moberg@stjohnelc.org if you are able to help!

HELP WANTED: We are seeking applicants for the position of Children’s Choir Director. There are job applications for this paid position, and copies of the job description in the church office for anyone interested in the position. The time requirement for the paid position includes Wednesday evenings and two Sunday mornings each month during the school year

SABBATICAL: Pastor Tangen will be taking a three-month sabbatical with the sabbatical divided into three parts. He will be gone from June 23 to July 23, and during the month of November. Next year he will be gone during the month of March. The purpose of the sabbatical is to provide time for study and reading, family activities, travel, and recreation. Parts of July and November will be spent at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN.

MISSION TRIP PRAYER PARTNERS: Youth and Family Ministry Director Jess Throlson is seeking prayer partners for the youth and adults going on the Senior High Mission Trip in July. This is a great way to support the ministry of the trip and is perfect for family devotions. If you are interested, talk to Jess Throlson at the church office (throlson@stjohnelc.org or 225-6747).

WE LISTEN TO THE WORD: In the gospel reading, Jesus sends out the disciples as his workers during the harvest. His instructions in Matthew 9 and 10 are extended and raise some of the dangers associated with following Jesus. Our challenge is to trust that we will have the necessary gifts to serve faithfully, even when our service seems dangerous or difficult.
