NEW HYMN: Next week we’ll begin learning hymn #809, Send Me, Lord. It’s a short hymn with both the text and music coming out of the South African tradition.
WELCOME TO WORSHIP: All the baptized are invited to the Lord’s Table. You may stand or kneel to receive the elements. We ask children who commune to extend their hands to receive the elements. Children who do not yet commune should have hands folded to receive a blessing from the pastors. You may ask a server to provide a gluten-free wafer or grape juice if needed.
YOUR CHURCH PHOTO: If you had your picture taken during the month of April you can pick up your free photo in the church office from Bev Olheiser during office hours.
WORSHIP INFORMATION: Attendance last week was 434 . . . Transmitters are available for the hearing impaired. Ask an usher for help . . . If it is uncomfortable for you to stand during the service, please feel free to remain seated . . . The nursery, located in the Commons Area, is not staffed during the summer, but may be used for infants and children when an adult is present . . . Children’s bags are available during worship in the Commons Area and in the church entry . . .
MISSION TRIP PRAYER PARTNERS: Youth and Family Ministry Director Jess Throlson is seeking prayer partners for the youth and adults going on the Senior High Mission Trip in July. After telling Jess you are interested, you will be paired with one or two mission trippers. You will receive a booklet with the same devotions being used on the trip. On each day of the trip, you will be asked to pray for something from that day’s devotion. This is a great way to support the ministry of the trip and is perfect for family devotions. If you are interested, talk to Jess Throlson at the church office (throlson@stjohnelc.org or 225-6747).

WE LISTEN TO THE WORD: In Deuteronomy Moses tells the people not only to bind the words of God on their heart and soul, but also to obey the commandments of the Lord. In the Second Reading from Romans, Paul announces that the gospel is God’s power at work for our salvation, and it is ours because of God’s grace in Jesus Christ. In the Gospel Reading, Jesus challenges his disciples not only to hear his words but to act on them.
A NEW SENIOR HIGH BIBLE STUDY begins Sunday, June 9 at 5:30 p.m. in the youth room. This is an intensive, chapter by chapter Bible study led by Jess Throlson. We meet most Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the summer. (Keep an eye on the church calendar.) Those confirmed in May are welcome and encouraged to begin participation in the Senior High Youth group with this Bible study.
CHRIST IN OUR HOME booklets for July through September are available in the narthex.
FATHER’S DAY BRUNCH AND CAR WASH: Not sure what to do with dad on Father’s Day (Sunday, June 15)? Join us for brunch and support the Senior High Belize Mission Trip! A brunch will be served from 7:30 a.m. until noon at the St. Anthony Club. The cost is $6 for those seven and older; the brunch is free for those age six and under. The car wash will be in the church alley from 7:30 a.m. until noon for a free will donation.
MISSION TRIP STOCKS: Starting June 22, you will have the opportunity to purchase stock in our mission trippers. For $50 per share you will get a post-trip newsletter with a behind the scenes look at the mission trip, stories from the trip, and insights from those who went. This is a great way to contribute to this ministry. Stocks will be sold between church services in the Commons Area from Sunday, June 22 through Sunday, July 6. You can also talk to Jess Throlson at the church office about purchasing stock.
HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS AND GRADUATES are invited to a weekly summer Bible study beginning Sunday, June 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Youth Room. The study is led by college student Jon Fuehrer, a 2006 DHS graduate, who says, “Going into college I had questions and doubts, and through the first two years I have learned so much about life and my faith. I am excited about having this Bible study because it gives me the opportunity to share my experiences with others who will be going through the same thing.” For more information contact Jon at jwfuehrer@gmail.com or Jess Throlson at jthrolson@stjohnelc.org.
FAMILY RETREAT
Families, it’s time to check your summer schedules! St. John Lutheran Church is sponsoring a family retreat at Badlands Ministries Bible Camp on the weekend of June 27-29. The theme is “God’s Power.”
The deadline to sign up with Youth & Family Ministry Director Jess Throlson is June 15. The cost is $25 per person. Telephone Jess at 225-6747 or e-mail her at throlson@stjohnelc.org to register.
SUMMER MUSIC: If you are willing to provide special music during summer worship services on Thursday and/or Sunday, contact the church office at 225-6747 or email tangen@stjohnelc.org.
MISSING KEYS: We have been missing the sacristy keys since Sunday, May 18. Musicians, ushers and Altar Guild members: If you used the keys that morning, will you please check to see if you have them?
WILL YOU HELP with items for Power Lab Vacation Bible School? If you have a leaf blower, a bowling ball that is 8 pounds or lighter, or a bowling ball that is 13 pounds or heavier, we’d love to borrow them for a VBS session and we promise to return them promptly! If you have an item you’re willing to lend us, please remove the tag from the “borrowed items” envelope on the bulletin board in the Commons Area and bring the item to Susan Moberg by the date on the tag. We’re also still in need of empty 16.9 - 20 oz. water bottles (the kind with straight sides) for one of our craft projects. Empty bottles may be left in the Education Office.
HELP WANTED: We are seeking applicants for the position of Children’s Choir Director. There are job applications for this paid position, and copies of the job description in the church office for anyone interested in the position. The time requirement for the paid position includes Wednesday evenings and two Sunday mornings each month during the school year.
BIRTHDAYS TO CELEBRATE for the following St. John members:
• Frank Kubik will be 91 years old on Sunday, June 8
• Edna Nester will be 92 years old on Monday, June 9
• Mildred Monke will be 96 years old on Tuesday, June 10.
SABBATICAL: Pastor Tangen will be taking a three-month sabbatical with the sabbatical divided into three parts. He will be gone this year from late June to late July and during the month of November. Next year he will be gone during the month of March. By dividing the sabbatical into three separate months, no interim pastor will be needed, though other pastors will be invited to preach to assist Pastor Lewton with some of the worship responsibilities. The purpose of the sabbatical is to provide time for study and reading, family activities, travel, and recreation. Parts of July and November will be spent at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN.
