DURING THE LENTEN SEASON we use the Kyrie, and replace the Alleluia Verse with the Lenten Verse on page 125. The “Alleluia” is an Easter word of celebration. In the season of Lent, the “Alleluia” is put away until Easter Sunday. In its place we use a Lenten acclamation: “Let your steadfast love come to us, O Lord. Save us as you promised; we will trust your word.”
COUNCIL INSTALLATION: Officers of the congregation for 2008 include Russ Murphy, president; Laura Meduna, vice-president, Larry Marcusen, senior trustee, and Kelly Cooper, senior deacon. Newly elected Council members include Sheldon Galster as a trustee, and Marcy Decker & Sandy Beaudoin as deacons. They join incumbent Council members Jared Andrist, Rick Thompson, Chad Hysjulien, Dream O’Brien, Dave Anderson and Bonnie Ficek.
CONFIRMATION CLASSES on the Sacraments begins Wed., Feb. 20 at 7:00 p.m. Students who are to attend are listed on the confirmation bulletin board in the Commons Area.
LENTEN BROCHURE: You are encouraged to take the 2008 Lent brochure home for your reference. One change: The Maundy Thursday service is at 7:00 p.m.
THE NEW HYMN we learned last week is a Lenten hymn called Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross (#335). The text was written by Fanny Crosby who was probably the most prolific hymn writer in history. Though blinded at six weeks of age, she wrote more than 8,000 hymns, including hymn #638, Blessed Assurance.
WORSHIP INFORMATION: Attendance last week 805 . . . Transmitters are available for the hearing impaired. Ask an usher for help . . . Children’s worship bags may be found in the Commons Area and in the main church entry . . . If it is uncomfortable for you to stand during the service, please feel free to remain seated . . . The nursery, located in the Commons Area, is open from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. for infants and children up to age four . . .
EASTER SUNDAY WORSHIP: Though Easter is five weeks away, because of time changes, we want you to know that Easter Sunday worship times will be 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. with the 11:00 a.m. service broadcast live over KDIX radio. There will be no 6:30 a.m. service on Easter Sunday. An Easter Brunch will be served from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m.
CHURCH PHOTOS SOUGHT: In anticipation of a new church directory, we are seeking photos (digital media, slides, or prints) of church activities, ceremonies and programs. Bring them to the church office and include a note describing the activities, the date the photos were taken, and names of the people in the photos. Also let us know if you want the photos returned.
ADULT CLASS IN FEBRUARY: Pastor Tangen’s Sunday adult class meets at 9:15 a.m. in the Fellowship Room. You are invited to the ongoing study of the Old Testament book of Jonah.
THE PEOPLE who assist with serving communion each Sunday are deacons on the Congregation Council. There are eight deacons who rotate as communion assistants. The other servers who help with communion are seventh grade confirmation students.
THE LUTHERAN MAGAZINE for February is available in the narthex and Commons Area.
THURSDAY MIDWEEK LENTEN WORSHIP: The preaching topic for the 7:00 p.m. Thursday Midweek Lenten services is Life’s Transitions. Just as the Lenten season is a transition time from contrition and confession to forgiveness and celebration, so our lives are times of transition and change. Speakers include:
Feb. 21 Jean Herauf, Children Leaving Home.
Feb. 28 Chris Hartman, From Life to Death.
Mar. 6 Laney Herauf, Leaving Home for College
Mar. 13 Russ Murphy, To Change Jobs or Not?
Sunday morning sermons from the pastors will also focus on Life’s Transitions based on the Lenten Bible texts.
NEXT THURSDAY’S LENTEN WORSHIP SPEAKER, Jean Herauf, graduated from UND and is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Area Manager for RehabVisions. She has been a member of St. John since 1985. Jean has served as a Sunday School teacher, a member of Youth and Family Ministry Committee, and is currently a member of the contemporary band. Jean and her husband Don have three children: Jacob, a junior at UND, Laney, a freshman at UND, and Melanie, an eighth grader.
LENTEN SUPPERS: The Thursday night Lenten suppers are served by the senior high youth group from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. The meal on Feb. 21 is hot dish and salad. Tacos will be served on Feb. 28. Free will donations will go toward next summer’s mission trip to Belize.
WELCOME to the Lord’s Table. All the baptized are invited to receive the Sacrament. You may stand or kneel to receive the elements. Children who commune may extend their hands; those who don’t yet commune should have hands folded and they will receive a blessing. Gluten-free wafers are available for those who cannot have wheat products. White grape juice is available for those who cannot have wine. Let a pastor or server know when communing.
PEW ENVELOPES: If you are a visitor or if you simply forgot your offering envelope and wish to designate your contribution, please use a pew envelope.
HARVEST HOME DONATIONS: The Harvest Home provides housing for family and friends of patients during their stay at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The Senior High youth are seeking donations for the home. Items needed by the Harvest Home are listed on the bulletin board in the Commons Area. Choose an item you wish to donate and return the time by Feb. 24 to the collection baskets in the man church entry or the Commons Area.
INTERESTED IN JOINING THE CONGREGATION? Contact one of the pastors or Faith Simonieg in the church office (225-6747). New members will be received on Sunday, Apr. 13 at the 10:30 a.m. service.
TRANSITIONS sometimes are the result of a crisis in our lives. The word crisis comes from a Greek word meaning “to decide.” Certainly it was a crisis for Abraham when God told him to go to a new land (Gen. 12:1). A crisis almost always provokes a time o f transition, but a crisis doesn’t have to be a catastrophe. For Abraham, the crisis resulted in God saying to him, “I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing” (Gen. 12:2).
